Rogge Cloof is located in the Roggeveld, a plateau located near Sutherland in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape, South Africa.

The origins of the farm and dark sky reserve Rogge Cloof (meaning rye ravine) date back to 1756 when Joachim Scholtz, the son of German and Nordic immigrants to Africa, acquired the property. Since then over more than 250 years, various owners have loved, nurtured and developed these hostile lands enduring lions, droughts, snow and freezing winds.

Located at an altitude of between 1400 to 1700 metres, with magnificent clear skies and expansive plains, Rogge Cloof is truly home to the greatest heavens on earth!

Rogge Cloof Accommodation

Rogge Cloof Private Nature Reserve is a registered Biosphere Reserve, with free-roaming game and cheetahs. Rogge Cloof offers accommodation with a variety of meal and activity options to customise your experience.

Orion Suites: Luxurious open plan accommodation units ideal for couples. Dinner & Breakfast included. (not equipped for self catering)

Heike's Cottage: Cosy Cottage with sky window and side window overlooking valley.  Sleeps 2 guests. Dinner & Breakfast included.

Cedar & Wolskuur Cottages: Spacious open-plan accommodation units, ideal for couples or couple with 2 small children.  Equipped for Self Catering with optional meals. Full Breakfast and 3-course dinner available at Rittersaal Dining Hall, at additional cost.

Family Homesteads: Waenhuis & Oryx House are spacious family accommodation, with lots of room for adults to rejuvenate in Karoo tranquillity & kids to run around. Equipped for Self Catering. Full Breakfast and 3-course dinner available at Rittersaal Dining Hall at additional cost.

Family Units: The Stables 1 & 2 are two spacious family accommodation units, ideal for families or friends travelling together.  Equipped for self catering. Full Breakfast and 3-course dinner available at Rittersaal Dining Hall at additional cost.

Adventure Camp: Dormitory/Group Accommodation with bunk bed capacity for up to 50 guests. Ideal for school, or student groups. Self-catering equipped kitchen available. Catering for group meals available on request.

Accommodation units are situated within the Rogge Cloof Eco-Village, which is 12 km's from the Rogge Cloof Main Entrance. The road leading to the Eco-Village is a well-maintained gravel road, which is accessible to sedans in normal weather conditions.

Rogge Cloof operates on solar power and the solar electrical supply system does not accommodate appliances such as hair dryers, fans, microwave ovens, coffee makers, or electric kettles. Power sockets for recharging phones and laptops are provided. The accommodation units are cosy and warm, with enough blankets, hot water bottles and fireplaces for the cold Sutherland winters.

Rittersaal Dining Hall

Authentically restored historic farmhouse, dating back to the late 1700’s, lovingly turned into a great dining hall reminiscent of the Middle Ages.

The Rittersaal is not a Restaurant; it is a guest Dining Hall, operating at fixed times and serving fixed menus.

Rogge Cloof Wines

Rogge Cloof aims to provide tourists and guests with unique wines reflecting the magic and tastes of the Roggeveld.  Rogge Cloof is proud to offer its own wines and guests may book wine tasting sessions to experience our quality wines.

The grapes for the red wines originate from vines of the Sutherland-Karoo region and, at 1500m above sea level, this is the coldest wine producing region in South Africa.

Adults Only.  Wine Tasting is arranged on request only.

Activities at Rogge Cloof

Activities available at Rogge Cloof are multiple and varied and will entertain the whole family, from toddlers to grandparents. Game Viewing trips, Cheetah Tracking, Fat Bike excursions, Mountain Bike trails, E-Bike Excursions, Salpeterkop Volcano hikes, Fossil Field visits, experiencing the Stars, remnants of Anglo-Boer War forts and so much more.
